Bethlehem’s unbeaten welterweight
Ronald Cruz, 12-0 (9), just keeps on winning whether he is the
favorite or the underdog. Friday night he will be in his hometown at
the Sand’s Casino against Lancaster’s knockout artist Doel
Carrasquillo, 15-17-1 (13), in the 10 round main event. This is a
Peltz Boxing Promotion with 7 other bouts underneath loaded with
local boxers.
The 24 year old Cruz was born in
Manati, PR, and is managed by former Phoenixville lightweight Jimmy
Deoria, and trained by Lemuel “Indio” Rodriguez with veteran Jim
Williams as his cut-man. In his last fight he stopped another
Lancaster boxer Manuel Guzman, 7-11-2, in 3 rounds in Atlantic City,
NJ. In 6 of his last 7 fights he has fought in the resort town. He
has had 5 of his 12 fights in the City of Brotherly Love. In less
than 18 months this being his 13th fight, J Russell Peltz
has kept him busy.
This writer got a call from manager
Jimmy Deoria from “Sin’s Barber Shop” in Bethlehem. “Ronald
is getting his usual pre-victory haircut from his good friend Will
who also attends all his fights. We know Carrasquillo carries a big
punch and is especially dangerous early”, said Deoria. “I’m
definitely read, and excited about fighting in my home town,” said
Cruz. “He looks great. He always prepares himself for every
fight. We had him at the James Shuler Gym in Philadelphia sparring
with Hank Lundy and Julian Williams.
In Cruz’s 3 bouts in 2010 he stopped
Puerto Rico’s Juan Ramon Cruz, 16-8-1, New Jersey’s former
amateur star Jeremy Bryan, 14-1, and Dillet Frederick, of Ft. Myers,
FL. In Frederick’s previous fight he stopped Raymond Charles,
12-0-2. In Bryan’s previous fight he went the full 8 rounds with
2008 Olympian Sadam Ali, 10-0. He also held a win over Tommy
Rainone, 11-0. It was only the second time in Guzman’s 20 fight
career that he was stopped.
The likeable Cruz show’s such
determination in the ring focusing on one thing, “destroy”! He
brings a good amount of fans whenever he fights so it is suspected at
home there will be a good house. We are told it will be in an air
conditioned tent at the Sands Casino. This will be his first 10
rounder.
Carrasquillo was also born in Puerto
Rico, in Yabucoa. Included in stopping 13 of his 15 opponents (86%)
was Reading’s Keenan Collins in the 1st round. In 2010
he stopped Jorge Melendez, 13-1-1, in Puerto Rico and in his last
fight stopped Denis Doughlin, 12-0, in Salisbury, MD.
On the undercard will be local boxer
Eliud Torres, 5-2-2 (2), of Allentown against Bryne Green, 6-4 (3),
of Vineland, NJ, coming off a main event win in Chester, PA, over
Ryan Belasco. Torres has won his last 2 bouts including defeating
Pottstown’s Travis Thompson. Will Miranda, 2-3-1 (0), also of
Allentown is in a rematch with Philadelphia’s Zeferino Albino,
4-12-2, who fought to a draw with Miranda in May. Miranda has a loss
to John Mercurio, 4-0 (3), of Philadelphia, who is taking on
Bethlehem’s Eric Newell, 1-1 (1), with both scaling over 260 in
their last fights.
First bout will be at 7:30pm and Peltz
is one promoter who starts on time! This is the first fight in
Bethlehem since 2000. The fireworks should start early in the main
event if not before!
