By Ken Hissner, Doghouse Boxing. - The first promotion in the town of Bethlehem, PA, in 11 years had their home town hero unbeaten welterweight Ronald Cruz, 13-0 (10), do a steady destruction of Lancaster, PA, knockout artist Doel Carrasquillo, 15-18-1 (13), at 1:09 of the 6th round of a scheduled 10. A crowd of approximately 1,500 in a air conditioned tent at the Sands Casino provided the shelter. Peltz Boxing Promotions made a successful debut in the facility that once had thousands working at Bethlehem Steel Co.

Before the fight started Carrasquillo was working the audience as he was getting it from the boo birds! As much as he tried Cruz was too fast for him and worked his body into the fourth round when Carrasquillo would later say “he cracked my ribs in the fourth”. Cruz and his corner couldn’t be happier. “I was never uneasy in this one the way Carrasquillo punched,” said Jimmy Deoria. The former lightweight boxer and now manager out of Phoenixville, PA, was relieved it was over.

Lemuel “Indio” Rodriguez the trainer of Cruz lifted him high in the air when Carrasquillo walked away from Cruz leaving referee Steve “Double SS” Smoger no choice but to stop it. Most fans were surprised at the sudden ending not realizing Carrasquillo fought several rounds with the injury. Cut man Jimmy Williams had little to do tonight for Cruz.

Will Miranda, 3-3-1, of Allentown, PA, eked out the decision over Zeferino Albino, 4-13-3 (2), of Philadelphia in a heavyweight 4 rounder. This was a rematch to the draw they fought to in Philadelphia. Miranda fought through a nasty cut over his left eye. Albino finished the last round strong but it wasn’t enough. Dave Greer had it 40-36 while Jackie Castellani and Steve Weisfeld had it 39-37 for Miranda.

Eliud Torres, 5-2-3 (2), of Allentown, seemed to get the short end of the stick in the voting after taking the first 4 rounds and dropping the last 2. Bryne Green, 6-4-1 (3), of Vineland, NJ, tried pulling it out in the last round with a knockout but Torres hung in there. Weisfeld seemed to have it right at 58-56 for Torres while Castellani came up with the 58-56 for Green. Greer called it 57-57. The referee in this lightweight match was Gary Rosado.

Super middleweight Rashad Brown, 5-0 (2), of Philadelphia, took the early going with a good jab over Omar Sims, 5-4-3 (3), of Baltimore, and seemed to be just as tired as Sims in the end since he was doing most of the giving. He dropped Sims in the second and won on all scores by 60-53. The referee was Smoger.

Junior middleweight Grayson Blake, 3-0 (1), of York, PA, was too busy for Anthony Abrams, 1-7 (0), of Philadelphia winning by scores of 40-36 twice and 39-37 in a 4 round bout. Smoger was the referee.

In the show opener Cesar Gonzales, 0-0-2, of Reading, PA, fought through a bad cut left eye and seemed to be fortunate to get a draw with Joshua Arocho, 1-4-1 (1), of Vineland, NJ, in a 4 round featherweight match. Rosado was the referee.

In the closing bout of the night Chris Plebani, 1-2, of Bristol, PA, edged out David Navarro, 0-4, of Philadelphia in a 4 round welterweight match. Navarro looked like he did enough to even the score before letting Plebani finish the stronger of the two in the final round. Plebani won on scores of 40-36, 39-37 and 39-38. The referee was Rosado.

Bethlehem’s heavyweight Eric Newell, 1-1 (1), had no opponent when Philadelphia’s John Mercurio, 4-0 (2), made the weigh-in but not the fight. A likely suspension will be administered to Mercurio .
