Under the middleweight fight between
former WBO welterweight and interim light middleweight champion Paul
“The Punisher” Williams, 39-2 (27) and unbeaten Cuban Erislandy
Lara, 15-0-1 (11), over 12 rounds with no title at stake are several
championship fights.
Japan’s southpaw Akifumi Shimoda,
23-2-1 (10), will be making his first defense of his WBA Super
bantamweight title Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic
City, NJ, which will be covered over HBO. His challenger will only
be engaging in his second fight (last one) over 8 rounds, in his No.
1 contender in Rico Ramos, 19-0 (10), out of Pico Rivera, CA, over 12
rounds.
Also added is the WBC Featherweight
title defense of champion Jhonny Gonzalez, 48-7 (42), of Mexico City,
MEX, being his first, against Tomas Villa, 23-7-4 (14), of Midland,
TX, over 12 rounds. Gonzalez went to Japan to score a knockout for
the title. Villa has won 3 of his last 4 fights including a win over
Salvatore Sanchez II in his last fight. If Villa is rated in the
WBC’s top 50, this writer does not see his name. He was in a fight
of the year with Philadelphia’s Rogers Mtagwa back in 2008 losing
in the last round. One thing for sure, he will be coming out firing
and with the KO record of Gonzalez in might be a short fight! With
72 rounds scheduled and airing over HBO let’s hope there are quite
a few short fights.
The re-juvinated Chris Arreola, 32-2
(28) and Friday Ahunanya, 24-7-3 (13), will be the lone heavyweight
fight on the card. A “sleeper” 8 rounder between Houston’s
Cornelius White, 16-1 (15), having lost his first fight in Atlantic
City in his last match is looking to get back in the win column
against Philadelphia’s Dhafir “No Fear” Smith, 24-20-7 (4), who
defeated former IBF Super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy and then
lost in his last bout to Jesus Gonzalez. He is capable of
“upsetting” anyone in the super middleweight division. This is
scheduled for 8 rounds at light heavyweight. White dropped down to
168 for his last fight and Smith, a super middleweight, hasn’t
fought at 175 since 2008. Hard to believe White is the older of the
two at 29 to Smith’s 28. The Philly fighter had fought around the
world. Not a knockout threat like White so it should be a good boxer
against puncher match-up.
