It’s a triple header title event at Downs Hotel & Casino Friday night! They have showcased 4 of Amir “Hardcore” Mansour’s last 5 fights since his coming back a year ago. This should be one of their biggest events ever with 50 rounds of boxing.
Southpaw Mansour has had less than 9 rounds of boxing due to no opponent going 3 rounds with him. The Wilmington, DE, heavyweight will be taking on his toughest opponent in Dominic “The Southern Disaster” Guinn, 33-7-1 (22), of Houston TX, over 10 rounds for the interim WBO NABO title.
Mansour, 14-0 (10), has stretched each opponent including one in Atlantic City in his last 5 fights. Guinn has never been stopped in 41 fights. His 5 fight winning streak was stopped in his last fight in Germany last October.
Guinn was 21-0 when over ESPN2 he stopped big Michael Grant, then 38-2, in Atlantic City. This was followed up with a win over Olympian Duncan Dokiwari, 22-1. He has wins highlighted over UK Olympic Gold medalist Audley Harrison, 19-1, Jean Francois Bergeron, 27-1 and Johnnie White, 21-0. Though 36, he is still younger than Mansour who is at 39.
In contacting Guinn he said he had no comments. It’s fight week and sometimes not the best time to talk to the fighters. Twice Guinn has fought for titles for the IBA coming up short against James “Lights Out” Toney and for the WBC Continental Americas title losing to southpaw Tony Thompson.
Mansour said, “This is my opportunity and I won’t let it pass. Guinn is a real test but I will be ready.” This hard punching southpaw will finally get to showcase his power with a former contender. He is trained by Moses Robinson and managed by Keith Stoffer. “People have questioned why Guinn now. I say why not? With Amir’s hiatus in his career, we were far behind. With a win this is a great chance to catch up and gain respect and ranking in the heavyweight division,” said Stoffer.
In a special 6 round bout for the Women’s NABF title “Queen” Ronica Jeffrey, 7-0 (1), of Brooklyn, NY, will be making her fifth Dover Downs appearance against tough Ela Nunez, 9-9-1 (2), of Jamestown, NY. Nunez has fought some of the best boxers in the business. Jeffrey is almost a household name here now. She is a former NY Golden Glove champion.
In another title bout Edgar Santana, 25-3 (16), of New York, looks to continue his winning ways on a 4 fight win streak against Omri Lowther, 14-3 (10), formerly out of Atlanta, now living in Toronto. They will meet for the vacant WBA NABA light welter title over 10 rounds.
In 2007 Santana stepped up defeating Dario Esalas, 30-6, and Grover Wiley, 30-10-1 who had a win over Julio Cesar Chavez. Next he defeated Josesito Lopez, 22-2 before taking off for 3 years coming back in May scoring a knockout.
Lowther won the WBA Fedecarible title in 2009 stopping Juan Carlos Batista, 18-1. He may have stepped up too far after that, dropping fights to boxers 18-1-1 and 25-0-1 in his last 2 fights.
In his eighth appearance at Dover Downs Kennett Square favorite Anthony “The Bull” Smith, 10-0 (8), will be in a slugfest meeting veteran Steve “The Spoiler” Walker 25-27 (23), of Hannibal, MO. In Walker’s 56 fights, 40 of them have ended via the knockout route. The only bout to go the distance for Smith was his debut. Hold down the hatches in this light heavyweight bout scheduled for 6!
“Rockin” Ryan Belasco, 14-5-3 (3), Wilmington, DE, who is 5-1-1 at Dover Downs, looks to bounce back from a recent loss in a disputed 8 round split decision. He takes on southpaw Fernando “The Whip” Basora, 8-6-1 (7), of the Bronx, NY, with only 2 of his fights going the distance. His last 5 opponents were undefeated. This is a light welterweight bout scheduled for 6 rounds.
Cruiserweight’s Dan “Bada Bing” Biddle, 7-1 (5), of Hockessin, DE, and Lamont “Problem Solver” Singletary, 1-0 (1), of Dover will be featured in 4 round bouts. In a special 4 rounder local amateur sensation Omar Douglas, 1-0 (0), is meeting Corey White, 1-2 (1), of OH, who in his debut stopped local super featherweight Joey Tiberi, now 5-1 (4). “I plan on using my jab and footwork to oub box my opponent. I also want to put some water in the basement with some vicious body ;unching to slow him down once I slow him down I plan on countering and taking advantage of his weakness. Hit homerun before the fourth and final round,” said Douglas.
The Matchmaker is Nick Tiberi. Public Relations Specialist Lisa Butler has kept the press well informed as usual for this big show with the first bout starting at 7:30pm. Rumor is there will be a double birthday celebration to follow..
