For Philadelphia’s unbeaten welterweight Mike Jones, 26-0 (19), it was just another sparring session with one of the last 13 Latino’s he has defeated in a row. The only difference this time was the opponent was rated.

He’s beaten 17 Latino’s out of the 26 opponents he’s faced. When he takes on former WBO light welter champion and top ranked IBF contender Randall “The Knock-Out King” Bailey for the vacant title in 2012 let’s hope it doesn’t throw him off. Maybe his promoter J Russell Peltz can invest in a sombrero for Bailey to wear. Bailey still has the knockout punch though he has only scored 1 in his 4 fights since moving up to welterweight.

Jones won 11 of 12 rounds busting up No. 4 contender Sebastian Lujan, 38-6-2 (24) at Madison Square Garden Saturday night (featured on the undercard to Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito II) before his corner said “enough!” The Argentine who is the WBC Latino champion was made to look foolish throughout. Unfortunately Jones is expected to knock out his opponents and when he doesn’t he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. With a title shot on the line he didn’t take any chances of a lucky punch thrown by Lujan despite the continuous urging from his corner to throw more punches. Next up is a puncher whom Jones should handle if he plays it just as safe. “We hope to meet Bailey by April or May,” said co-promoter Peltz. Since Bailey is now with DiBella instead of Don King things should going smoothly.

Jones will have to show more side to side movement against Bailey than he showed with Lujan. Ever since Jones became part of Top Rank‘s co-promotion the rumors are one of their trainers will put the “finishing touches” on Jones. Don’t be surprised if Freddie Roach is brought in with current trainer Vaughn Jackson assisting him. Jackson has been there since the beginning and even though he won’t win any popularity contests with the rest of the team, he and Jones are close. It will be interesting.

Noticeably also was the absence of co-manager and veteran cut-man Jim Williams in the corner. He was replaced by Danny Milano, nephew of legendary Al Certo. Whenever one of the Jim Williams and Doc Nowicki fighters are in there Williams is in the corner. Assisting Jackson was strength coach Danny Davis who is also known as one of the top hand wrappers per Williams. Funny how things change once a boxer get’s closer to the top. Let it be known all of the Philly fans are pulling for Jones to join Bernard Hopkins and hopefully next month Steve “USS” Cunningham regaining his IBF title for the 3x as Philly world champions.
