Former British heavyweight champion Scott Gammer has decided to call time on his career in the wake of his points defeat to John McDermott. Gammer, 30, was bidding for a second tilt at the prestigious Lonsdale belt and a rematch against Danny Williams who handed the Pembrokeshire man his first pro defeat in March to capture the crown.

After ‘The Hammer’ recorded a hard-fought points win over Paul King in June he was widely expected to a victory away from a much sought after rematch with the Brixton Bomber.

However, a sub-standard performance against a game John McDermott a week ago saw the Welshman fall to a shock 98-93 points defeat which ended his bid for a coveted title shot.

"Winning the British title really meant everything to me," Gammer told the Western Telegraph.

"I never planned on finishing this way - but I just knew that in my heart that I can't carry on anymore."

Gammer’s long-time promoter Paul Boyce told the Telegraph: “It wasn't an easy decision as boxing is such a big part of his life but with a heavy heart Scott concedes he has other priorities in his life.”

"Scott is now married, has a new baby and wants to concentrate his efforts on his family and his new plastering business".

Gammer tore through the domestic scene as an amateur, with over a hundred bouts to his name and five Welsh titles

He first rose to notoriety in the pro ranks last year after becoming the first Welshman in 23 years since David Preece to win the British heavyweight title after knocking out Mark Krence. The hard-hitting heavyweight bows out of the sport with an impressive fighting resume in compiling a highly respectable 18-2-1 (9 KO’s) pro record.
