Frankie, of course, was talking about Referees Wayne Hedgpeth and Joe Cortez, the third men in the ring for the Canelo Alvarez/Alfonso Gomez—Floyd Mayweather/Victor Ortiz bouts (respectively)…
“These two guys have done more to denigrate the fight game, in one night, than any other instance I can remember,” continued the ranting Gambino.
“Hernando Cortez brought small-pox to the Aztecs and Joe Cortez brought a pox upon boxing. As for that Hedgpeth—why he called the fight faster my first honeymoon lasted!”
Frankie was on a roll…
To loyal readers of Dog House Boxing, I hope you’ll all go to amazon.com and search for Anatomy of an Adult Film, that’s my bookit’s doing well. Anatomy of an Adult Film is a fast-paced read and a sexy rompI’m sure you’ll love it! Thanks, Sunset |
“Let me tell you Blondie,” Frankie continued, “Manny Pacquiao is James Bond and Floyd is “Money Penny” Mayweather—they will never fight. Mayweather is concerned with his record not his proper place in the annuls of boxing.
“Floyd is such a stud—after his first KO since 1999 he wants to take on Larry Merchant. Let me tell you, Floyd might win that fight but Larry could drink the little sniveler under the table!”
Wow, was he pissed!
I’ll say that it was confusing. I mean Ortiz blatantly head-butted—a cowardly act—but he was called to the carpet for it. Cortez correctly deducted a point—signaling the judges of his decision. However, that’s when Joe seemed to lose it.
As much as it is said that a fighter should protect himself at all times, it’s also a RULE that the referee has an obligation to protect the fighters at all times. Cortez clearly put a stop to the fight with his point deduction but did he ever re-commence the action? I think he was lost and that’s a huge loss for our sport, because so many fans, aficionados and the curious simply don’t know the ins and outs of the game and they expect the professionals to have a grasp—especially in a fight of this magnitude.”
Dino Duva, my dear friend and scion of the Duva boxing dynasty said, “No one did anything illegal—not Floyd, not Joe—but it seems Joe lost control or his attention, but again, nothing illegal.”
“That’s like a sober guy getting into an accident instead of a drunk guy,” beefed Gambino—the insurance still goes up, only you don’t do as much time—Some one needs to explain themselves!”
That brings us back to Cali and the questionable stoppage of Gomez. Sure, Canelo had hurt him. And yes, he’d ran him into the ropes but the ensuing punches were all blocked—nothing landed—I’ve had my ass slapped harder during consentioual sex than any of those blows did damage to Alfonso!
My fear is that our great sport is being tarnished as we struggle to hang on to the vestiges of its wonderful heritage—mixed martial arts breathing down our necks.
My other favorite sport is horse-racing—a sport under a steady stream of suspicion but a sport that has become the most transparent in all the gaming kingdom…
Boxing needs to be up front and honest. Address the issues that will ultimately bury our pomp in paranoia and side-ways glances...
Someone please explain Saturday, September 17th to me!
