Olajide & Gibbs Dominate the Night

Feb 21, 2004  Vito Trabucco
Friday Night Fights on ESPN 2 showed two rising stars continuing their climb in their respected divisions. Middleweight Willie “The Gladiator” Gibbs (16-0 13 KO’s) and junior middleweight Tokunbo Olajide (20-1 17 KO’s).

In the main event which featured Tokunbo Olajide versus Larry Marks (24-7 14 KO’s) in a fight that would end in controversy.

After a slow paced 1st round, Olajide caught Marks with a solid left hook (a punch Olajide is well known for) in the 2nd. Now the controversy begins.

Referee Tony Orlando begins his count. Counting all the way to 8. He asked Marks if he was all right. Marks takes a knee trying to collect an extra second or two. With no response, Tony Orlando stops the fight.

Marks and his corner jump up in protest debating he was okay. Even color commentator Teddy Atlas thought Marks was ready to fight. But Tony Orlando did nothing wrong. Marks didn’t respond to his question therefore giving him more than enough reason to call a halt to the bout.

In the co-main event Willie Gibbs faced tough Joe Rayburn (12-3-1 7 KO’s). The fight began with an immediate barrage of heavy blows by Gibbs. Rayburn, showing guts, survived the assault of Gibbs for the first 8 rounds of this 10 round contest. Some may believe it was because of Gibbs’s refusal to attack the body. Nonetheless his blows were devastating.

Come round 9. Gibbs quickly drops Rayburn. After Rayburn returned to his feet, Gibbs was all over his opponent flooring him again.

A big 9th round KO for this up and coming middleweight contender. Or should I say this up and coming “Gladiator.”

What was expected to be a good card was no disappointment. Olajide and Gibbs both delivered us with some very exciting knockouts. I for one, am very anxious to see them in the ring again soon.

Also in the ESPN studio was Undisputed Middleweight Champion of the World Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins. He did in fact give us some insight to the much anticipated De La Hoya match. We learned that Hopkins will be in Vegas next week to sign the papers to make this fight official come September. Talk about a big night for boxing.
