Verno Phillips vs. Julio Garcia: A Battle for Junior Middlewight Rankings

March 4, 2004  By Jason Unpingco
ESPN Friday Night Fights will present a card headlining junior middleweights Verno Phillips (36-9-1, 18 KO’s) against Julio Garcia (25-2-2, 11KO’s) at the Pala Casino, San Diego, CA.

Verno Philips, from Dever, CO, has victories over name opponents such as Lupe Aquino, Shibata Flores, and Bronco McKart. He is a proven veteran along with a solid contender in the vast junior middleweight division mix, which includes big names such as Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas and Winky Wright.

He will be going up against wild swinging, offense minded puncher Julio “The Cuban Lover” Garcia. In 2003, Garcia’s fight against J.C. Candelo, a serious junior middleweight prospect on the rise, showed the hungry big hearted Cuban fighter coming forward until being dominated and eventually knocked out in the eighth round.

Garcia has an exciting crowd pleasing style and Philips is looking to keep his victory streak intact with his more polished boxing skills. The winner of this bout will be ranked the number two contender in the IBF rankings. With that position on the line, especially in the glamorous junior middleweight division, the winner moves on to bigger paydays and a possible title shot down the road.
