Juan Diaz - Baby Bull
Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz is peaking at the right time, just a few days ahead of his return bout April 13 in Corpus Christi, TX against Pipino Cuevas Jr.

In the past three weeks, Diaz has increased his sparring regimen each week, and physically seems to be peaking at the right time, as with each passing day he is tearing through sparring partners with increasing ferocity.

After sparring sessions, he does mitts with head trainer Derwin Richards. His punches are snapping with the perfect “thwack” sound as he fires off combinations one after another. The accuracy of his punches is amazing for a man that was totally out of boxing training for two and a half years.

Another startling difference is the physical appearance of Diaz. No longer a young kid, he is a twenty-nine year old man in the prime of his physical life. He is leaner and stronger than he was in the prime of his career, but still shows the same unlimited stamina.

If Diaz is to reclaim the lightweight division that was once his, there are three boxers in his way: Ricky Burns of Scotland, Richard Abril of Cuba, and Miguel Vasquez of Mexico.

The Vasquez fight is unlikely to happen if Diaz continues his relationship with Golden Boy Promotions, due to the cold war between De La Hoya’s company and Bob Arum’s Top Rank. That leaves Burns and Abril. Abril is an excellent boxer, but his bouts are a cure for insomnia. A Burns clash is a mouthwatering scenario, as Burns is similar to Diaz, in that he is a boxer but with a thirst to brawl as well, and a rabid fanbase. Asked about a clash with Burns, he simply smiles.

The lightweight division has been put on notice, the Baby Bull is back and wants what to reclaim the throne of king of the division.
