World Boxing Council mourns the passing of Mate Parlov

The World Boxing Council declared a day of world mourning in the scope of our sport due to the passing away of former Lightheavyweight world champion, Mate Parlov, who died yesterday July 29th, in Pula, Croatia, where he lived.

Parlov, who was the first Croatian world champion, won the title in such division on January 7th, 1978, defeating Miguel Angel Cuello from Argentina, and in the same year, on December 2nd, he lost the title when he defended it for the second time, against Marvin Johnson from the U.S.A.; prior to that, he had defeated his first challenger, John Conteh from Great Britain.

After that, Parlov made an attempt to win in the back then newborn Cruiserweight division, and he drew and lost to American fighter Marvin Camel, in bouts that took place in 1979 and 1980.

Mate Parlov had an outstanding career as an amateur boxer; he was Olympic Champion in the Lightheavyweight division, winning the gold medal in 1972, during the games that took place in Munich, Germany.

A southpaw, who had a spectacular style, and in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, reached the quarter-finals, but was eliminated by Chris Finnegan from Great Britain.

Parlov was born in Split, Croatia in 1948 and died when he was 59.

His professional record was: 24 wins; 12 of them by knockout, he drew twice, and lost three times.

During the 44th WBC annual convention held in Dubrovnik-Cavtat, Croatia, our President Jose Sulaiman Chagnon, awarded Mate Parlov with the status of World Boxing Council Honorary Champion.

EL BOXEO ESTA DE LUTO: FALLECIO MATE PARLOV

El Consejo Mundial de Boxeo declaró luto en el ámbito de nuestro deporte por el fallecimiento del ex campeón mundial semipesado, Mate Parlov, el pasado día 29 en Pula, Croacia, donde residía.

Parlov, que fue el primer campeón mundial croata, se coronó entre los semipesados el 7 de enero de 1978, imponiéndose al argentino Miguel Angel Cuello y el mismo año, en diciembre 2, perdió la corona en su segunda defensa, la que realizó contra el estadounidense Marvin Johnson. Antes había superado a su primer retador, el británico John Conteh.

Después de eso, Parlov hizo un intento en la entonces naciente división de los cruceros, y empató y perdió frente al norteamericano Marvin Camel, en batallas efectuadas en 1979 y 1980.

Mate Parlov tuvo una sobresaliente carrera como aficionado. Fue campeón olímpico en peso semicompleto, ganando la medalla de oro en 1972, durante los Juegos que tuvieron lugar en Munich, Alemania.

Peleador zurdo, de espectacular estilo, en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1968 en México, llegó a cuartos de final, en donde fue eliminado por el británico Chris Finnegan.

Parlov nació en Split, Croacia en 1948 y murió a los 59 años de edad.

Su record profesional fue de 24 victorias; 12 de ellas por nocaut, empató en dos ocasiones y perdió 3 peleas.

Durante la Convención anual número 44 del CMB, efectuada en Dubrovnik-Cavtat, Croacia, nuestro Presidente José Sulaimán Chagnón, premió a Mate Parlov con el status de Campeón Honorario del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo.
