After seeing some gangling, skinny kid get KOed by unheralded Rustico Torrecampo more than a decade ago, I thought I was staring at another young boxer destined to fail. Little did I know then that I was staring at the very future of Filipino boxing itself.
Fast forward a few years to Bangkok- WBC world flyweight champion Chatchai Sasakul was the toast of Thailand, considered a national treasure by the populace. It was a sunny afternoon filled with a lot of
anxious viewers who were also there to commemorate the 1998 Asian games. Triumph was as synonymous to tiger beer to the mainlanders and today they were expecting another shellacking. Midway into the fight they were right- with Sasakul winning almost every round heading into the 7th. However it all went crashing down after Sasakul was staggered by a crushing left straight to the jaw. Chatchai never got back up, and from there I was beginning to believe once more after seeing a 19-year old beat Thailand's best fighter, in their own soil no less.
As the accolades grew, comparisons to the great Flash Elorde became louder. But deep within I remained skeptical if brute force will be enough against the elites. All my doubts came to a halt soon after. It was an event that shocked the world, Barrera was pummeled from pillar to post by a challenger who was supposed to be another feather in the cap of the great Mexican champion. The moment ushered the changing of the guard- and what better way to do it against a world pound for pound boxer.
By now there is really nothing left to say, much less leave any room for doubt. The Pound for Pound Numero Uno finally gets his long overdue claim to recognition as the world's best. Move over world, a Filipino is on top of the boxing summit- and his name is Manny Pacquiao.
