Aussie looking for that lucky break
Heavyweight coming to America for shot at the "Big Time"
Nov 03, 2003:Press Release

Lowell, Ma. - 31 year old Australian, Kali Meehan is coming to America in search of his dream. After more than 15 years between the ring posts and chasing that dream down under, he's hoping the time is right to catch an opportunity here in the USA. He's hoping that a door will open and he can accomplish his goal, a shot at the heavyweight title.
Kali, originally from New Zealand, started boxing early on.

At the age of 15, Kali's cousin took him to the local boxing gym. The trainer had a policy that you either boxed for the club or pay for your training. At 18 Kali was given a chance to move into his trainers house (Lati Raeli) on the promise that he trained every day. Kali finished his amateur career with 20 wins and 5 losses.

On May 25th 1997, he made his professional debut with a 1st rd KO against Taule Malisi in Auckland NZ.

After KO'ing James Grima in 1998, Kali moved his family (Wife, Rowena, boys Louis and Willis) to the Gold Coast, Australia to further his career. He now has an addition to the family baby Isaac Kali.

Kali won the Aussie title (4th rd KO) on the 24th June 1999 against Big Bob Mirovic.
Having run out of opponents in Australia Kali took a fight in Japan on a 1 day notice and had to get off the floor to KO Peter "Ishimaru" Okhello in 3 rds in what he described as his hardest fight and opponent overall.

Meehan, now 28-1 (22 ko's) is proud of his accomplishments thus far. He has a few titles under his belt including:

3 Time Australian Heavyweight Champion
3 Time IBF Pan Pacific Heavyweight Champion
2 Time WBO Asian Pacific Heavyweight Champion
1998 OBA heavyweight Champion
1998 South Seas heavyweight Champion.

All 10 of these bouts were won by KO.

Having run out of legitimate opponents, Kali began to grow frustrated and considered hanging up his gloves. That was until long time friend and trainer Mark Janssen convinced Kali to give it one last shot. Janssen, himself a retired undefeated middleweight from Australia, has a lot of faith in Meehan. "He is big, he can fight and I believe he can go with any of the top heavies in America", says Janssen.
At 6 foot 6 inches tall, Meehan is big and he packs a punch.

With the current situation in the heavyweight division today, Meehan and his team of Janssen, Ted Allen (Sydney, Australia) and Lowell's Jerry Colton, will pull out all the stops to get Kali the opportunity he's been working at for so long.

Meehan will be doing his training at the West End Gym in Lowell in preparation for a December 12 fight in Australia, while also providing sparring for former heavyweight champ, John Ruiz in preparation for his fight with Hasim Rahman on December 13th..
